Thoughts on the Colorado shootings

Over a 12 hour period, 24-year-old Matthew Murray killed four people because they're Christians -- two at a missionary training facility in Arvada, Colo., and two at New Life Church in Colorado Springs.

"You Christians brought this on yourselves," Murray wrote on a Web site for people who have left Pentecostal and fundamentalist religious organizations.

It was the most recent posting of his on the site, dated Sunday, December 9 at 11:03 a.m.

Murray lived with his parents in a home in unincorporated Arapahoe County where police conducted a search on Sunday night.

In the Web writings, which are now being investigated by Colorado Springs Police, Arvada Police and the FBI, Murray warned, "I'm coming for EVERYONE soon and I WILL be armed to the @#%$ teeth and I WILL shoot to kill. ...God, I can't wait till I can kill you people. Feel no remorse, no sense of shame, I don't care if I live or die in the shoot-out. All I want to do is kill and injure as many of you ... as I can especially Christians who are to blame for most of the problems in the world."

As one of the Powerline guys noted: This puts the death toll in America from anti-Christian hate crimes higher than that of Muslims post-9/11. CAIR might want to reconsider its complaints.

An autopsy report released today reveals that Murray committed suicide -- the wounds caused by churchgoer and volunteer security guard Jeanne Assam were not fatal.

Ms. Assam's actions caused me to revisit Gregory Boyd's book, "The Myth of a Christian Nation." In that book, Boyd argues against Christians entering the armed forces -- unless they're serving as a chaplain, doctor, medic or any other role that could be served by a conscientous objector -- because a "real" follower of Christ would never kill anyone. I mentioned that Boyd's logic would appear to also prohibit Christians from serving as police officers.

I'm curious what Mr. Boyd thinks about Ms. Assam and what she did Sunday morning. Is the Christian thing to do stand by while a madman murders defenseless people? I'd love to know Boyd's response.
