The Migrant Caravan and Reparations

The latest news is that the migrant caravan from Central America, currently stalled in Tijuana, marched to the U.S. consulate there and demanded either entrance to the United States, or a $50,000 per person in reparations for them to go home.

This makes me think that most of the migrants are of French extraction: De Gaulle of these people.

The first group demanding action, numbering about 100, arrived at the U.S. Consulate at about 11 am Tuesday. The migrants said they were asking that the Trump Administration pay them $50,000 each or allow them into the U.S.

When asked how the group came up with the $50,000 figure, organizer Alfonso Guerrero Ulloa of Honduras, said they chose that number as a group.

“It may seem like a lot of money to you,” Ulloa said. “But it is a small sum compared to everything the United States has stolen from Honduras.”

The group’s letter criticized American intervention in Central America. They gave the U.S. Consulate 72 hours to respond. They said they had not decided what to do if their demands were not met.

This is how you got Trump.

You want sympathy, assistance, asylum in this country and that's the tack you take? Stupid doesn't begin to express this ultimatum.

It should be little surprise that some in the comments section of that article offer to meet those demands with various rifle calibers.

It also puts to the lie that these people are looking for asylum. If your life is truly in danger, $50,000 isn't going to save it in a country that's systematically persecuting you.

I've said this before with regard to illegal immigrants who are currently covered under DACA: Work hard, shut up, and keep your heads down. This policy, and let's be clear—it's a policy and not a law, exists at the sufferance of the American people. If you protest or you begin to demand this or that, you lose a lot of potential goodwill from millions of Americans who aren't hard-left Democrat partisans who see you as little more than future votes.

The Political Problem

Most of the media painted President Donald Trump's fascination with the caravan in the weeks leading up to last month's midterm elections as little more than scaremongering designed to turn out his base. While that was likely Trump's goal (that didn't really end up working), the caravan was and is a real thing with real people and real world repercussions.

One thing that went largely unmentioned in yesterday's donnybrook over $5 billion for the wall or a government shutdown, was that Democrats now have a real say in what happens. Nancy Pelosi will likely have the speaker's gavel and control the agenda in the House of Representatives. What does she propose we do about these people at the border?

I've seen lots of articles in print and online advocating compassion and allowing these people into the country. If that happens, then what about the next group? And the one after?

Is it the position of the Democratic Party, which has in recent months been calling for the elimination of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, that we have open borders?

We've heard lots of calls for immigration reform, but I suspect that if Pelosi were to put forward the position held by the majority of the Democratic base, then you can congratulate Trump on his reelection right now.

We know what the GOP is proposing to do: Build a Wall.

The media seems more interested in Russian collusion than a serious humanitarian issue on our southern border. Someone needs to step up and ask the Democrats to seriously address it.
