Stupid Facebook Posts

I rarely post to my personal Facebook page. I'll do it when traveling, or attending a concert or something similar, but I'm not a regular Facebook user. I look at Facebook to see what's up with friends and family—travel, reading, concerts, kids, etc.—not politics. Some people—mainly former colleagues at newspapers—post political stuff. I have a certain tolerance level for it, but do it too much and too often and I'll mute or unfriend them. Life's too short to have to put up with a lot of that political stuff on Facebook and in newspapers, magazines, Web sites, network news, movies, ad infinitum.

Which brings me to today's edition of Stupid Facebook Posts.

Stupid Facebook Post
How liberals view Social Security.

It doesn't get much dumber than this. It should be noted that the individual that posted this has a defined benefit pension from The San Diego Union-Tribune and I'd be shocked if he didn't also have a 401(k) as well—while I was at the paper, they matched 50% of your own contribution up to 3%. Not even a partisan Democrat turns down free money.

I don't know how old this is, but the last time there was a serious proposal to privatize Social Security was under Bush 43. Even then, it was merely an optional, partial privatization; you couldn't put all your Social Security taxes into approved (conservatively invested) funds, just some of it. According to CNN:

How much payroll tax would be diverted to individual investment accounts? President Bush indicated that eventually, workers would be permitted to invest up to a third of the 12.4 percent payroll tax that they and their employers pay on their wages. (Workers pay 6.2 percent and their employers pay the other 6.2 percent.)

Annual contributions would be capped at $1,000 in 2009 and thereafter rise slightly more than $100 per year.

The key thing was that if you chose to do this (it was entirely optional), you would actually own those funds. If you died before you turned 65, or had monies still in the account after your death, you could will the funds to your survivors.'

Social Security is going bankrupt. This plan might have exacerbated that problem, or it might have ameliorated it. We'll never really know because Democrats demagogue the issue, as illustrated above. I've written a lot about Social Security over the years, so if you're interested, you can dig deeper here.
